You think every change has to be BIG? These 3 small changes can pay HUGE dividends for your Mental Health…

When we think about making life changes, we tend to automatically GO BIG.   So often we will say ” I am going to start going to the gym everyday” or ” I am going to meditate for 30 minutes daily” or ” I am going to lose 50 pounds”.

You step back, and it’s instant overwhelm.

While big changes are important and can be life changing for some, here are a few small changes you can make today that will have a huge impact on how you feel emotionally and physically.

1. Stop and smell the roses ( I mean REALLY smell them)…

The power of mindfulness is gaining traction and we know more now than ever how developing a mindfulness practice can positively impact your physical and mental health.  {read more here}

How to get started:

How many times have you found yourself running through your daily agenda in your mind while you are in the shower?

Pick one thing that you do everyday.  Some examples would be:  opening the front door, starting your car, brushing your teeth, taking a shower, and getting dressed.

Whenever you do that thing, only think about that activity.  Really focus on that one thing.  Describe in your mind what you are experiencing.  Smells, feelings, tastes, sensations, what you are hearing, REALLY NOTICE.  Be present in that one activity for that time in the day. Over time, maybe you extend that to other times in the day and so on…

2.  Make your bedtime and wake time sacred.

How many of us grab our cell phones first thing when we wake up?   Before we have even really adjusted our eyes to the light in the room, we are checking our email and Facebook to see what we missed out on overnight.  What about the fact that the last thing that we do before we lay our heads on the pillow is the same.  It leaves us overstimulated, overtired, and unbalanced.

How to get started:

Leave your phone in another room.  If you use your phone as your alarm to wake in the morning, set it away from your nightstand so that you will not be tempted to grab it first thing.  Better yet, establish a routine in which you get into bed, technology free, and take a few deep breaths before drifting off to sleep and do the same upon waking.

Take it one step further…  cite three things you are grateful for at night and express gratitude in the morning for the day you have been given.

3. Make water your starter…even before your coffee

Yep.  You read it right.  Before Coffee!  There are several noted benefits to drinking a big glass of water first thing in the morning.  Add a little lemon or apple cider vinegar and you are stepping up your game.   Starting your day this way can aid digestion, give you hydration, prevents oxidation, and the list goes on.  { read more here }

Simple change, HUGE benefit!

How to get started:

Wake up.   Get your glass.  Fill it up!  Squeeze half a lemon in it, or 2 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar, maybe a little honey if you need and voila!

Start Small.  Change Big. One Step at a Time.

What small changes have you made that have paid BIG dividends??
